Is tooth sensitivity a sign that teeth whitening can damage your teeth?

Jul 14 • 3 minute read

While no one wants yellow teeth, recent studies have shown there might be dangerous downsides to whitening strips and other whitening products. Therefore, it may be in your best interest to understand the safety behind whitening your teeth before you book your appointment with the dentist.

Dentin Damage and Teeth Bleaching

Most commonly known, gel-filled trays and sticky strips designed to whiten your smile using hydrogen peroxide are conveniently available over the counter and are proven to be very effective. However, according to the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology study results, hydrogen peroxide and products containing it may damage the tooth's dentin layer and its proteins. In other words, it may damage the hard tissue just below the tooth's surface enamel.

Can whitening be harmful to my teeth?

Much of the research on whitening products shows that they may soften or roughen the surface of a person's teeth. However, it is crucial to understand that the studies were not performed on living teeth and instead in a lab. Therefore, it is entirely possible that this damage is temporary and may reverse once a person no longer uses the teeth bleaching products. Even more, it is not entirely convincing that these effects are as harmful as they seem. There is notenough information to know whether whitening your teeth will have long-term effects.

Get Whiter Teeth Safely

In the end, we do know that hydrogen peroxide bleaching products have proven to be highly effective for decades. Not only do millions of people use these products, but many dentists recommend them and haven't seen any links to cavity risk or tooth fractures so far.

You can also rest easy knowing that the American Dental Association (ADA) has publicly stated that hydrogen peroxide whiteners are effective and, most importantly, safe.

So, if you do decide to use hydrogen peroxide bleaching products, here are the ways you can do so safely:

1.      Always look for The ADA seal of approval. Any whitening toothpaste or teeth bleaching products that have been ruled safe and effective will have an ADA seal of approval on their packaging.

2.      Read and Follow the Instructions. To get the best results while also protecting your teeth, make sure to follow the product's instructions carefully. Some may suggest using once a day, while others are safer to use more frequently.

3.      Ask Your Dentist. Your dentist will know which products are right for you and give you the best solutions to your problem. Some bleaching products are geared towards yellowed teeth caused by aging, while others are best for teeth stained by food or drinks. However, your dentist will also know if a bleaching solution will not improve discoloration caused by more complex problems. So, it is crucial to talk to your dentist so that they can improve other issues, such as cavities or gum disease, before recommending any bleaching treatments.

4.      Trust Yourself and Your Teeth. Sometimes, whitening products can cause temporary sensitivity in a person's teeth or gums. While this isn't a sign of long-term damage, it may be uncomfortable and urge you to take a break from any bleaching products. You can always switch to a milder product, talk to your dentist, and find the right solutions for you.

Prevent Staining from the Beginning

The best way to care for your teeth is by taking preventative measures. If you take the necessary steps in keeping your teeth healthy and clean, you may not have to use whitening or bleaching products as often. So, do yourself a favor and follow the tips listed below:

-          brush twice a day and make sure to floss

-          quit smoking immediately

-          limit staining drinks such as coffee, tea, or wine

-          schedule and go to regular dental cleanings to remove any surface stains and plaque
